AI Buys Items and Completes Payments? This scenario, previously considered science fiction, is now entering the development phase of real-world services.
Google recently officially announced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), based on its AI technology. This is a technology-based standard that allows AI agents to fully automate payments under the user's explicit permission, and is expected to shake up the foundations of the global payment infrastructure.
Payment without humans… “AI directly purchases and pays”
Existing e-commerce payment systems are fundamentally designed around the “human act of pressing a button.” All processes, including decision-making, authentication, and approval, in the payment process have traditionally relied on human intervention.
However, with the advancement of Agentic AI technology, a new commerce method is emerging that understands the user's intent, searches for products, and automatically processes payments under optimal conditions.
For example, if a user says, "Buy me camping gear for less than 100,000 won," the AI will find matching products, create a shopping cart, and complete the payment process.
AP2: The Key to Solving Payment Reliability Issues
Google's AP2 Protocol aims to address the following three major challenges in AI-based payments:
- Authorization: Has the user actually delegated payment authority to the AI?
- Authenticity: How can merchants verify that AI requests are genuine user intent?
- Accountability: Who is responsible in the event of errors or fraud?
Google solves these problems with technologies called Mandate (digital signature agreement) and VC (Verifiable Credentials).

Leaves 'AI Payment Evidence' with the Mandate Structure
AP2 encrypts and records the transaction process in three steps. This minimizes the risk of the AI agent randomly performing payments or malfunctioning.

Google Builds AP2 Ecosystem with 60 Global Partners
Google is presenting AP2 as an open source standard and is expanding the ecosystem with the following partners:
- Financial Institutions: Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, JCB, etc.
- Fintech: PayPal, Adyen, Revolut, Checkout.com
- Web3 Companies: Coinbase, MetaMask, Ethereum Foundation
- Domestic Companies: NHN KCP
The x402 protocol for Web3 expansion will also be introduced, and stablecoin and cryptocurrency payments are expected to become reality in the future.
